| Judging solely on appearance, one might not think that Big Brother Daytaun and Little Brother Mason look like your typical match. The fact is, on the first day the two met, neither did they! When Big Brother Daytaun arrived at Little Brother Mason's house for the first time in April of 2002, they each noticed a stark contrast in height, in favor of Little Brother Mason. Daytuan remembers the day vividly and says he was shocked to see his Little Brother, then 13, was taller than he. His Little Brother remembers the first meeting much the same way, saying "I could not believe I was bigger than my Big Brother!"
Once over the initial shock of appearances, the two realized they had a lot in common. On the first meeting, it did not take long before they were talking, joking around, showing each other boxing movers and singing. Anyone who knows the match can see that the same life and enthusiasm exists as it did on the day of their meeting. Big Brother Daytuan and Little Brother Mason faithfully attend the monthly match outings. They are always in the lead to start a game or activity and make new friends with the other matches. In addition to these events, they enjoy playing a variety of sports, going to the park, watching movies, bowling and just hanging out.
Big and Little both agree that they have received more out of the program than they expected. Little Brother Mason is glad about the opportunities he's had in the Be-A-Friend Group Mentoring Program and now, with his Big Brother. Daytuan hoped for the best when he first became involved and nearly two years later he feels he's received that. He feels his Big Brother experience has been a rewarding and enriching experience that he often recommends to others. |
